I (24F) have a sister (21F) who I have never been the closest with growing up.
  • 02
We often fought over small things when we were young kids, like calling shotgun and who ate the last ice cream- which is pretty normal!
  • 03
As we got older, we became very different people, and she became toxic towards me as I am not into the things she likes, and deems "normal".
  • 04
This escalated into larger arguments and resulted in her getting violent sometimes. (I will add that this violence and hatred wasn't just towards me but also the rest of my family.) I moved out of our family home when I graduated at 17, due to the tense environment I was living in, and moved in with my close friend for 8 months before we got a share apartment together.

I still talk to my parents who I love very much, despite always feeling second to my sister, and only see my sister at family gatherings.
  • 06
Now, I won't go into detail about some of the specifics of her personal issues, but she has been diagnosed with narcissistic personality disorder, and in the last few years has become a steady drinker.
  • 07
My parents (57F and 58M) have always defended her, and let her get away with lots of things that she shouldn't have.
  • 08
6 weeks ago my sister (who still lives with our parents) brought home a cat she found under her car at work, and insisted she be allowed to keep it because she "has a spiritual connection with it".
  • 09
Since then, she has refused to look after it properly, and forced my parents to do all the heavy lifting, despite me saying to bring the cat to the shelter if she won't look after it.
  • 10
My parents took the cat (who my sister has named Beanbag, Beans for short) to the vet and discovered that Beans is pregnant.
  • 11
Ac at at the vet. The veterinarian holds the cat with gloves, cat is looking at the camera.
  • 12
3 weeks ago, my sister had a massive episode and blew up at my parents, packed her stuff and went to live at her boyfriends house, bringing Beanbag (but none of her cat stuff) with her.
  • 13
When I found out that my sister had brought the cat with her I was furious with my parents, and called my sister, demanding that she come home, or at least drop Beanbag at my parents.
  • 14
My sister refused to do this, stating that she was looking after the cat perfectly, despite the fact that I KNOW she is incapable of looking after it, especially PREGNANT.

This is where I might be the asshole. A few days after I called her, I was driving through her boyfriend's neighbourhood (my best friend lives nearby) and saw Beanbag in his front yard (they have no fence).

  • 18
In a moment of impulse and anger at my sister and her treatment of this poor cat (who was clearly dirty, dehydrated and suffering) I pulled over, scooped up the cat (who knows me) and put it in the trunk of my car.
  • 19
I drove to my best friends house (she has 2 cats, Floof and Daisy). We took Beans to the vet to get her checked up, and get an estimate on the delivery of her kittens.
  • 20
My friend is now looking after the cat as her mum used to be a breeder, while my sister blows up my phone asking what I've done to her cat, (her boyfriend or his parents must have seen me take Beans on their cameras or something.) I know it isn't right to steal someone's pet, but my sister was incapable of looking after Beans, and my parents refused to step in.

Dickie_downer Id get some advice from someone more savvy with laws in your area though- if the cat isnt chipped and your sister doesnt have paperwork for her, you could probably get her chipped and make it impossible for her to get the cat again
  • 23
deployant_100 but legally cats are property, so it might be construed as theft. I might be wrong here but if you take a street cat to the vet and pay its bills it's legally ours. I am not a lawyer though so take this with a grain of salt. If she's NPD I wouldn't put it past her to steal a pet, you should check if the cat is already chipped and have owners.
  • 24
Clean_Permit_3791 Nope beans needed saving she was suffering. Did she chip the cat when she went to the vet? You should get her chipped under your friends name.
  • 25
Classic Ad3987 Get the cat chipped. Now she is yours. Block your sister and her flying monkeys. I bet she only suspects you grabbed the cat and has no proof other than suspicions or maybe a report of someone in a similar colored vehicle grabbing the cat. Admit nothing to anyone, especially your enabling parents.

    Lanky-Necessary8409 Thanks for saving Beans.

Whereswolf You need to see a lawyer. They may can prove you stole the cat. Your defence could be they're negliging it or you want to find the real owners because she just took it of the streets too. I agree she might not be the best owner, but I don't think a judge would care. The cat was free to go if it wanted. Yet it stayed. Having toys apparently wasn't that meaningful for the cat as for you.

Automatic Tap310 make sure you have paperwork from the vet about the cat's condition. Having proof the cat was malnourished or dehydrated is negligent ownership. I assume you had the cat checked for a chip at some point? She may have actual owners looking for her.
